Onyx opens new data centre in Scotland

Data CentreOnyx Group has stormed ahead with expansion plans in Scotland, opening its second state of the art facility in Edinburgh in six months.

The Group is opening a new datacentre just half a mile away from its new workplace recovery centre in South Gyle, which opened in April this year.

Data centres are crucial as they manage and store critical data of all types of businesses. Outsourcing data management is more cost effective than looking after it in house and, by having an offsite datacentre like Onyx’s latest facility in Edinburgh, companies can focus on the day to day running of the business without having to worry about their IT Infrastructure and storage of their data and critical applications.

Speaking about the opening, Neil Stephenson, CEO of Onyx Group said: “This is a significant investment for the Onyx Group which will build on our existing data centre in Glasgow and workplace recovery centres in Edinburgh and Glasgow.”

“The new datacentre is a standalone, purpose-built facility and will have full ISO 27001 information security accreditation. It will link to our leading data centre in Glasgow, giving our clients the opportunity to store their data in two facilities in order to ensure full resilience. It is one of our biggest data centres – providing 650 racks for data storage over two floors. As well as buying storage space across the main data floors, customers will also be able to have bespoke solutions created specifically for their needs, including exclusive access to private data suites.”

The Group has drawn on a grant from Scottish Enterprise to open the facility and is looking to recruit engineers to work in the new centre. The company, which acquired Campbell Lee and Edinburgh-based Dundas IT last year, has already secured its first customer for the centre.

Onyx Group has quadrupled its turnover from £3m to £12m over the past two years through organic growth and a series of strategic acquisitions. In addition to data centres and workplace recovery, the Group provides managed services and networking to over 3,000 UK customers from its bases in Scotland and three offices in North East England, along with a further base in Slough. The Group also has two data centres and a second workplace centre in the North East.

Stephenson explained: “We are now able to offer a data centre, workplace recovery, consultancy and network support from four sites across the UK and this is a model we are looking to roll out as part of expansion plans to reach a turnover of £25m by the end of the year.”

A launch event will take place for the opening on 1st September, when customers will have the opportunity to take part in a full tour of the new data centre.
